AS FEATURED IN:
Background
UWorld Roger CPA Review was founded in 2001 by rock-star lecturer and company namesake, Roger Philipp, who’s been helping candidates prepare for and pass the CPA exam for nearly 30 years!
After years of success as a standalone company Roger CPA Review eventually caught the attention of UWorld, a premier company in the test prep space, and was acquired. Now as part of the UWorld team, UWorld Roger CPA Review has become a powerhouse CPA review course.
Course Planner / Adaptive Learning Technology
UWorld Roger CPA’s dashboard is very clean and easy to use.
As soon as you log in you’re taken to My Dashboard, which reminds you of your upcoming exam dates and gives you a high-level view of your progress on each exam section. From there you can navigate to any course section you want or can simply pick up where you left off during your last session by clicking the “Jump to Last Section” button.
I like both of these options as it gives you a clear view and flexibility in choosing your study path.
Navigating to your current section also gives you a snapshot of your overall progress and lets you easily navigate to your study tasks.
As for the study planner, UWorld Roger has created a variety of Excel-based study calendars to follow depending on how quickly you’re planning to pass the exam (3-, 6-, 9- and 12-month formats are available).
While I’m an Excel junky and would find these helpful to get started, the Excel-based format unfortunately isn’t helpful for long if you happen to fall off track. It’d be nice if UWorld Roger could integrate the study planner into its software so the calendar could automatically adapt to your actual timeline in case things change, but perhaps I’m being too picky here.
UWorld Roger CPA Review also utilizes their own predictive learning software called SmartPath, which updates in real-time as you progress through the course and provides targeted recommendations on where you should focus your efforts.
SmartPath is similar to the predictive learning software you’ll find with other exam providers, but what I like about UWorld Roger’s is that it tracks your performance against those of former UWorld Roger students that have actually passed the exam so you know the feedback you’re getting is realistic.
Lectures
UWorld Roger CPA’s lectures are far and away the most fun and engaging you’ll find in a CPA review course. The lectures are delivered by none other than Roger Philipp, CPA, CGMA himself, whose teaching style reminds me of the most lively and enjoyable classroom lectures I had back in my college days. Have a look for yourself:
With over 100 hours of video instruction broken up into 10-25 minute bite-sized chunks, these more engaging lectures could make a huge difference in your learning and retention of information. If you’re not looking forward to sitting through hundreds of hours of boring video lectures and would like an instructor that captures your attention and keeps you focused then UWorld Roger CPA is the clear winner.
The lectures also track nicely alongside the digital textbook and digital whiteboard so you can highlight certain portions of the text and take notes for later use as you go along.
The only downside to UWorld Roger CPA’s lecture style I see is that Roger himself can get so excited that he can move through some the material rather quickly, so you may occasionally have a tough time keeping up as you mark your textbook and take notes. This can be easily fixed by pausing or slowing down the lectures in the video player or by turning on the subtitles though.
Textbooks
UWorld Roger CPA Review comes with access to both physical and digital textbooks, depending on which course pack you go with.
I find the digital textbooks to be more useful as they can be reviewed alongside the lectures and allow for easier note-taking and bookmarking (see below for an example). On the other hand, the hard-copy textbooks are nice for when you just want to read through the material or give your eyes a break from constantly looking at a screen all day.
From a content perspective I found their textbooks to be a bit leaner in terms of examples and explanations than some of the other prep courses out there, but this is because so much of UWorld Roger CPA Review’s teaching is done through their amazing lectures.
I actually found this to be a positive aspect since the textbooks compliment the lectures well, but if you learn best by reading the textbook and examples then this could be a downside to this course.
Flashcards
Flashcards are an age-old tool in the exam prep toolkit, giving you the flexibility to study on the go, wherever and whenever.
UWorld Roger CPA offers 200+ digital flashcards covering key terms, mnemonics, and summaries for each exam section, through its UWorld Roger app (iOS or Android friendly).
Most courses offer digital flashcards at this point, but UWorld Roger’s stand out because they use “spaced-repetition technology”. There’s some fancy-pants science behind this method but essentially it means the flashcard app will adapt to your strengths and weaknesses and present the more difficult flashcards and topics with greater frequency than the topics that you’ve already mastered. This can be a huge time saver and let’s you focus more attention on your weak areas.
Unfortunately UWorld Roger CPA doesn’t have any printed flashcards. They used to offer them in a nice, organized spindle for each exam section but it looks like they did away with this option a few years ago.
Multiple Choice Questions
UWorld Roger CPA Review comes with 6,000+ multiple choice questions. Each multiple choice question provides detailed explanations behind each answer. Pro-tip: Be sure to read these and make sure you understand them, as this is a great way to reinforce the material and to deepen your knowledge.
There’s also a custom quiz option that lets you select particular chapters or topics to test yourself on. This feature is best used to periodically test yourself and to stay fresh on the material as you move through the course
You also have the option to focus on questions that you haven’t seen before or have previously missed. UWorld Roger’s SmartPath technology makes this very easy by tracking your performance even selecting the questions for you.
Many students find that having access to as much practice material as possible was crucial to mastering the exam content. If you’re considering UWorld Roger but are concerned about the lower number of multiple choice questions, I’d strongly consider supplementing this course with Gleim’s Mega Bank (10,000+ questions and simulations) or Wiley’s Online Test Bank (6,000+ questions and simulations).
Simulations
UWorld Roger CPA Review also has 300+ task-based simulations, more than most of the major review courses out there.
UWorld Roger’s simulations include a wide range of material and I found their overall look and feel is very close to what you’ll see on the actual CPA exam. As with the multiple choice questions, your performance on the simulations is integrated into UWorld Roger’s SmartPath technology, so you can tailor and target your future learning as you go through the course.
With simulations making up more than 50% of the overall grade for most exam sections, these are huge factors to consider when selecting a review course.
Practice Exams
Each course section is capped off by UWorld Roger CPA Review’s exam simulator, which lets you generate an unlimited number of practice exams in preparation for the big day.
Time management is a massively underrated aspect of CPA exam prep that many people overlook. UWorld Roger CPA’s exams are timed and broken up into 5 testlets just like the CPA exam, which means you’ll test your knowledge of the material and your time management skills at the same time. You’re also able to flag questions and toggle between questions within a testlet just like on the exam as well.
At the end of each practice exam you’ll be able to see which areas you performed well vs. those you did not. You’ll also get the explanations behind each incorrect answer so you can see why you made a mistake and reinforce your learning. Don’t skip this step!
Course Access
UWorld Roger CPA Review is accessible from any device and even have an app available for iOS and Android devices, giving you maximum flexibility to study however you’d like.
Access to the Premier course is limited to 18 months but with the Elite course you’ll have unlimited access until you pass the exam.
This level of access is generally consistent with the other CPA review programs and is plenty of time for most candidates. If you need more time with the Premier course you can always purchase 1, 3, 6 or 12 month extensions for as little as $39/month, much less than what it would cost to purchase another course brand new.
Customer Support
UWorld Roger CPA offers some really nice customer support options.
Their Study Hub gives you access to read through tons of FAQs from other exam candidates and is your fastest option to answering any questions you might have.
If you can’t find what you’re looking for on the Study Hub then you can always ask their team of expert CPAs who promise to provide you with a response within 24 hours. You can ask a question anytime, 24/7, and expect a prompt response from their team.
Pricing and Course Packages
UWorld Roger CPA offers two course packages: Premier and Elite. Both courses come with the most critical exam prep material, including:
- 100+ hours of super engaging video and audio lectures
- Digital textbooks that synch with the video lectures
- Full suite of 6,000+ multiple-choice questions and 300+ task-based simulations
- Exam simulator with unlimited practice exams that mirror the CPA exam format
- Mobile app that syncs across all devices

The Elite course package comes with a few more resources, including unlimited access until you pass the exam, printed textbooks, UWorld Roger’s 4-Part CRAM course, and UWorld Roger CPA’s “Expert Deck” digital flashcards.
The Premier course is a great option if you’re a self-starter and/or plan to primarily use the core study materials (textbook, video/audio lectures, MCQs / simulations / practice exams). If you need a little bit more variety in your study methods or just want to have every tool at your disposal then I think the Elite course is worth the extra cost.
Let’s have a look at the different course packages in more detail and see which one is best for you:
Financing and Discounts
UWorld Roger CPA offers financing for those who’d prefer to spread out the cost of their course. This is a great option for anyone that can’t afford to pay for the entire course up-front. Interest rates range anywhere from 10-30% depending on your credit qualifications and may include a down payment.
UWorld Roger CPA also offers a nice variety of discounts, including discounts for college students (either currently enrolled or within 60 days of your graduation date) and for those that were enrolled in another course and failed the exam. Don’t pass these up!
Free Trial
If you’re interested in UWorld Roger CPA then I recommend you try it out for yourself. Use the link below for a 7 day FREE trial of their course where you’ll get access to most of the course material.
Bottom Line
UWorld Roger CPA Review is the most engaging CPA review course out there, particularly for folks who learn better with a more dynamic teaching style like Roger Philipp’s.
The course is well organized and all the materials are integrated to save you loads of time as you prepare for the exam. They also have better customer service than most other providers, which can be a huge boost in car you get stuck on the heavier exam material.
If you’re leaning towards UWorld Roger CPA but are concerned about the amount of practice material then I recommend pairing it with a supplement like Wiley’s Online Test Bank or Gleim’s Mega Test Bank to make sure you’re covered.
FAQ’s
Roger CPA offers two full 4-part courses. One is the Elite Unlimited at $3,599 which gives you unlimited access to the course materials. The other is the Premier course at $1,899, which can be had for a discounted $1,599. Roger frequently offers discounts, but you will have to check their site for the latest and best deal. Other than these two, you can get single-section courses with 6 months of access starting at $399 only.
Roger CPA stands out because of its engaging and motivating lecture style. If you’re an auditory learner, you can skim the course materials and focus on the video lectures for an in-depth and rich learning experience. Once you’re confident with the topics, go through the simulations and practice MCQs, check your scores, and read the text in detail for the areas that you need to improve.
Although we can’t independently verify it, UWorld Roger boasts a 94% pass rate for their CPA exam candidates, so we’ll have to take their word for it. Nonetheless, UWorld Roger does have plenty of fans and has endorsements from several Tier 2 accounting firms, so their course must be effective.
You should choose Roger if your preferred learning style is listening to lectures and/or you need a stimulating teaching style. UWorld Roger CPA provides almost 100+ hours of masterful lectures that include dynamic energy and mnemonics so that you can recall the topics on exam day.
